Get the most from your alarm system: Turn it on!
2 January 2010
If your security alarm is not turned on, it will not provide the level of protection it was designed to. I know that is stating the obvious, but it is all too common for people who have an alarm system to not turn it on/arm it when they leave their home or business. I believe this is in part due to their particular alarm systems not being convenient to turn on and/or off.
I confess until recently, after changing the configuration of my alarm system, I rarely armed my own system. I own a single story home with a detached garage; both have full perimeter detection along with interior motion detectors. My previous setup was all the perimeter points (doors and windows) were set up on a perimeter area and the motions were all on one interior area. I recently changed my setup and added some two-way wireless key chain/keyFOB arming buttons and now find it extremely convenient to arm and disarm the system to provide protection while we are both home, sleeping, and away from our home.
I have the added benefit of having keypads inside my garage, at my homes entryways, and outside our master bedroom. When I know we are inside for the evening, I simply set my system for the "Sleep" from the menu. I also have the option of turning the system on "Instant" at this point, which means as soon as any door is opened the siren would instantly sound and the signal sent to the monitoring company. No reason to give an intruder ANY time to get inside my home while my family is inside. I cannot begin to tell you how much better I sleep at night knowing that should anyone even crack a window or door, my alarm will instantly activate.
I also added a few two-way wireless two-button remotes. What makes these units so unique is the two-way capability. Sure other manufacturers have remote buttons, but they do NOT feature two-way communications. So now when I pull out of my garage and the door closes, I press the "ARM" button on my remote. The remote has ICON''s that will then tell me whether the alarm is on or off, no more guessing if the system actually turned on. Plus the system is armed in the "instant" mode. This means that as soon as any point of protection is activated the alarm will instantly sound the sirens and send the signal to the monitoring company. When I come home, I simply press the disarm button and wait for the two-way wireless to confirm that the system has deactivated the alarm system. I have been in the alarm industry for over fourteen years and I can tell you that I think this is one of the slickest, coolest, and most useful things to happen in our industry.
